Patchwork Quilting

Patchwork Quilting; Political Quilts

Picture
Patchwork Quilting; who would have thought that last evening, sitting watching our Congress voting on a history altering health care reform bill that I would hear a commentator compare all its varied parts to patchwork quilting?

Throughout history American patchwork quilting women have recorded history in what have become known as political quilts.  There are many, like the one pictured here, that date to the Civil War.  This one was made in honor of a Confederate soldier, but many quilts were made by families of Union soldiers also.  Heck, SLAVES made political quilts!

So, do you think that we will start to see political quilts depicting 2010?  Not the Obama quilts that are already being made, of Obama the man, of his inauguration, etc.   But quilts NOT about the man, but about what he, and his administration stands for.   Quilts not funded by any NEA grants, but true, honest political patchwork quilting that makes a true political statement.

It does not matter what side of the aisle you are on... I think that both sides will make some fabulous quilts!  Will YOU be putting your feelings into your work?   Patchwork quilting that goes beyond the pretty into how you truly feel?  What types of quilts will be chronicling  will history show led the way in 2010?  So what do YOU feel?  I welcome your Comments today!
